IPTV is a way in which internet Televison services are streamed over a packet-switched network infrastructure using the Internet Protocol suite. This means that TV pictures are sent over the Internet or distributed on a LAN.

IPTV in its simplest form, Live TV is streamed from an Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD), whose source is either from a digital satellite (DVB-S) or digital terrestrial (DVB-T (Freeview)). The Live TV packets are streamed out of the IRD onto a LAN network infrastructure for distribution through the premises. The Live TV packets are carried over the LAN (usually CAT5 network cabling). Individual set top boxes (STBs) connected to a TV receive the Live TV packets from the network and convert them back to a TV picture.

The IPTV system can be enhanced with Video on Demand (VoD) for playing movies, a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) for recording TV programs and Timeshifting for pausing Live TV.
